The $10k hammer blow and the real value we gain from our work.
I was recently reminded of the old story of the $10,000 hammer.
A shipbuilder was experiencing a critical problem with one of its vessels. Engineers had tried to diagnose the issue but couldn't find the cause.
An expert was called in.
He spent a few minutes inspecting the ship, listening, observing and asking questions.
Then he picked up a hammer and struck a single spot.
The problem was fixed.
A few days later, the shipbuilder received an invoice for $10,000.
Perplexed (maybe even perturbed), the client demanded an itemised breakdown.
The expert replied:
- Hitting the ship with a hammer: $10
- Knowing where to hit it: $9,990
The hammer strike only took a few seconds. The inspection took a few minutes.
But that wasn't what the shipbuilder was paying for.
The value was the 20 years of experience, learning, mistakes, successes, observations and pattern recognition that allowed him to know exactly where to strike.
That story highlights something important.
Salary matters. But the most valuable thing we accumulate over time is expertise, not experience.
The best people don't simply collect experiences. They convert experiences into expertise.
They reflect on what worked.
They understand why it worked.
They identify patterns.
They develop judgement.
And over time, that judgement becomes incredibly valuable. Expertise is the practical application. It is anchored to outcomes. It is far more transferrable.
It's one of the things I look for most when interviewing people.
Many candidates can explain what they did.
Fewer can explain what they learned.
They're the ones who go through their career with the "record button" on.
The strongest candidates can clearly articulate the expertise they've developed and how they would apply it in a different environment. It's transferrable.
That's usually the signal.
The people who create the most value are often those who understand the value of the expertise they've accumulated along the way.
💡 Worth asking yourself,
what expertise have I developed this week?
this month?
this year?
